This is the point of land closest to the South American continent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_2962.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-170\" src=\"http:\/\/www.randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_2962-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"corinthian and zodiac antarctica\" width=\"250\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_2965.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-171\" src=\"http:\/\/www.randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_2965-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"MG_2965.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_2965-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_2965-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><!--more--><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our first landing was at Brown Bluff, where a large gentoo and adelie colony thrived at the foot of vertical cliffs several hundred feet high, the island\u2019s namesake. A short climb up a slippery snowfield allowed us a peek into a rock crevice where two snow petrels were nesting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_2916.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-172 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_2916-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"MG_2916.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_2916-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_2916-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thick sea ice prevented us from making a landing at Paulet Island, unfortunately. Paulet Island was where members of Otto Nordenski\u00f6ld\u2019s 1902 Swedish Antarctic Expedition overwintered in a small hut, which I visited on my first voyage a couple of decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>So we headed northwest through a narrow passageway choked with great tabular icebergs, gleaming in the stormy late afternoon light and turned south along the Danko Coast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_3038.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-173\" src=\"http:\/\/www.randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_3038-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"MG_3038.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_3038-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/randygreenphoto.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/MG_3038-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday, December 24, 2009 During the night, we sailed south from Elephant Island to some of the outer islands of the Antarctic Peninsula.
